An article from a developer for the Camino project gives some really good insight into the motivations of open-source contributors.
It gets even more interesting in the comments:
I really wish I had the time to work on patches for bug, because I DO have the time, but I don’t know how.
… Which prompted me (and others) to start listing the many, many things that one can do for an open-source project that aren’t necessarily code or patches. As I mention in my first comment, “Indeed, in most cases, when you contribute to open source projects writing code is the last thing you will be doing.

I would really love to see more comments on that entry, and see if we can build a “definitive” guide for people who’d like to contribute to Open Source, but feel lost.
